Setting up an email account in Outlook Express
The following procedures describe how to configure the Microsoft Outlook Express email program. After completing the following procedures, you will be able to use Outlook Express to send and receive email to and from your POP email account. If you do not have Outlook Express installed on your computer, please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance.
Before continuing, you must have already created the desired POP Email Account. If you need help creating an additional POP email account, please contact us
You should have the following information handy before continuing:
- Your Domain Name (e.g., yourdomain.com)
- Your email account name and password
- Your Internet Service Provider’s SMTP mail server name (e.g., smtp.telus.net) - Please contact your ISP directly if you do not know the name of their SMTP mail server.
Note: In Outlook Express, there are many configuration options and settings you can change to customize the program for personal use. (For example, you could choose to automatically check for new email every 2 minutes.) For more information on these features, please speak with your ISP, consult the documentation, or use the help menu within the program.
OK, now let's get started!
- Start Outlook Express by double clicking on the appropriate program icon. (The icon is probably located on your desktop or in the System Tray.)
- Select Tools from the main menu, and then select Accounts. The Internet Accounts window opens up.
- Make sure the Mail tab is selected. Single-click on the Add> button, and then choose Mail from the pop-up list. The Internet Connection Wizard opens, displaying the Your Name window.
- Type your name in the Display Name field. This is the name that people will see when they receive email from you.
- Select Next>. The Internet E-mail Address window opens.
- Type your new email address in the E-Mail address field. (e.g., andy@yourdomain.com) This is the address that people will send email to when replying to your messages.
- Select Next>. The E-mail Server Names window opens.
Note: If Outlook Express has already been configured for other mail addresses, these fields may automatically be completed. If needed, this information can be deleted and replaced with the new information as described below - Where it states: My incoming mail server is a.., POP3 should already be listed. If it is not, click on the downward pointing triangle. Then select POP3.
- In the Incoming mail (POP3) server field, enter the following:
mail.yourdomain.com
(You must replace the part in red with your own domain name.)
- In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field, enter the name of your ISP's outgoing mail server. If you do not know this, you will need to contact your ISP to provide you with the information.
- Select Next>. The Internet Mail Logon window opens.
- Type the username and password for your new email account in the appropriate fields.
Note: Your username is the full email address. (e.g., name@yourdomain.com) - Select Next>. The Congratulations window opens.
- Select Finish to complete the setup.
- Press the Send/Receive icon from the toolbar to retrieve your email from the POP account.
